Introduction 

Journal of Institute of Medicine Nepal (JIOM Nepal) is a premier peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary medical journal from Nepal on publication for the last forty seven years.  It is a multi-specialty journal carrying the aspirations of all those affiliated with the Institute of Medicine. It is in English language and publishes papers on health and medical topics.

It is published by the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University. The journal has been in regular print and over the years, its influence has been growing with increase in submission in numerous subjects ranging from clinical to basic sciences. It has a panel of reputed peer reviewers with specialization in their respective fields.

JIOM Nepal was first published in 1979 AD and the first Chief Editor was Prof Gopal Acharya. Electronic version was started from 1998 AD.

Aim and Scope of JIOM Nepal

The aim of the JIOM Nepal is to advance the field of medicine by publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research works that contributes to the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human disease. Its scope encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including clinical medicine, dentistry, nursing, biomedical sciences, laboratory sciences, public health, and healthcare policy.

JIOM Nepal welcomes original research articles, reviews, case reports, and editorials that foster evidence-based practice, support innovation, and promote global health improvement. By facilitating the dissemination of scientific knowledge, it aims to serves as a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals worldwide.

Peer-review process

The manuscripts submitted to JIOM Nepal are initially screened by the editorial body. Manuscripts are also assessed for presence of plagiarism during this initial screening. Manuscripts with insufficient originality, serious scientific and technical flaws, or lack of a significant message and substantial amount of plagiarism are rejected.  Poorly written and those not complying to journal format are requested to re-submit after the revision according to format. About 30% of manuscripts are rejected by the editorial board without proceeding to peer-review process.  Manuscripts approved by the editorial body are proceeded to peer-review process.

JIOM Nepal uses double-blinded peer review. Manuscripts are sent to two expert reviewers without revealing the identity of the authors and reviewers to each other. Average time period from submission of article to final decision is 6-8 weeks. Each manuscript is meticulously reviewed by the JIOM Nepal editor based on the comments from the reviewers and takes a final decision on the manuscript. The authors will be informed about the reviewers' comments and acceptance/rejection of manuscript.

Articles accepted will be copy-edited for grammar, punctuation, print style, and format. Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author.  Non response to proof copy may delay the publication of the article or may cause rejection.

Article submission/processing/publication fees

JIOM Nepal does not charge its authors for any type of submission, processing and publication fees. 

Publication frequency

JIOM Nepal is published three times a year in April, August and December.

Open access policy

JIOM Nepal follows open-access policy. All articles that are published in JIOM Nepal are immediately freely available to read, download and share. 

Copyright policy

Articles published by JIOM Nepal are under the terms of a Creative Commons - Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is given appropriate credit, but not for commercial purposes.

Authors should transfer of copyright of the published works to JIOM Nepal. However, the authors have the rights to

  • retain patent and trademark rights
  • retain the rights to use their research data freely without any restriction
  • receive proper attribution and credit for their published work
