Use of Generative AI

Statement on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

We recognize the growing impact of Generative AI (GenAI) tools, including language models like ChatGPT, in academic research and publishing. To ensure transparency, integrity, and accountability, we provide the following guidance on the use of GenAI in relation to submissions and editorial processes.

  1. Use of GenAI by Authors
  • Authors must disclose any use of GenAI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) in the preparation of manuscripts.
  • GenAI tools may be used only to assist in language editing, grammar correction, summarization, or idea generation. Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy and originality of the content.
  • AI tools must not be listed as authors. Only individuals who meet the ICMJE authorship criteria can be named as authors.
  • A disclosure statement should be included in the manuscript, such as:

"Portions of this manuscript were assisted by a generative AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, OpenAI) for [editing/drafting/translation purposes]. The authors have reviewed and take full responsibility for the content."

  1. Use of GenAI in Peer Review
  • Reviewers must not use GenAI tools to process or summarize confidential manuscript content unless explicitly allowed by the journal and with appropriate safeguards in place.
  • All peer reviews must reflect the reviewer’s own evaluation and must maintain strict confidentiality.
  1. Use of GenAI by Editors
  • Editors may use GenAI tools for administrative and editorial support (e.g., grammar checks, summaries), but editorial decisions are made by human editors with full responsibility for content integrity.
  • Any AI-assisted decisions must be supervised and verified by a qualified editor.
  1. Ethical Considerations
  • GenAI tools may sometimes generate inaccurate or fabricated content. Authors, reviewers, and editors are responsible for ensuring that all published material is factual, ethical, and original.
  • Plagiarism or data fabrication through GenAI is strictly prohibited and subject to disciplinary action.
  1. Policy Updates
  • This policy will be reviewed regularly to remain aligned with evolving international guidelines (COPE, ICMJE, WAME, etc.) and technological advancements.
